User stories don’t work for AI

Xavier Vallée, Founder, Sapionic

The original post included the slide it describes. It is on LinkedIn, linked below.

I showed this slide at the CAIO Inspired Summit last week, and it got the biggest reaction of any slide in the deck.

The left column is what every digital transformation team has been trained on. Agile. Design Thinking. MVPs. User stories. Deterministic test scripts. They are industry standard, and they worked beautifully for digital.

They break for AI.

The one that gets the most pushback is always user stories. “As a user I want” captures nothing that AI needs. What data feeds the decision? What confidence threshold triggers automation versus human review? What happens when the model is wrong?

Those are decision specifications. And I would be willing to bet that your BA team has never written one.

Which row on this slide hits closest to home for you?
